Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state of India, has witnessed significant socio-economic and environmental transformations in recent decades. Among the most pressing issues are migration and environmental degradation, which have deeply impacted the cultural and ecological fabric of the region. This research paper explores how these dual crises are represented in Indian English literature. It examines the themes of displacement, identity crisis, ecological imbalance, and the breakdown of traditional lifestyles. The study highlights how literature serves as a reflective medium to understand the human and environmental consequences of unchecked development and socio-economic disparities. The paper argues that Indian English literature not only documents these crises but also plays a crucial role in raising awareness and advocating for sustainable solutions.
Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in northern India, has been facing a dual crisis of environmental degradation and large-scale migration. These interconnected issues have significantly impacted the socio-economic and cultural fabric of the region. This research paper explores the relationship between migration and environmental crisis in Uttarakhand, with a particular focus on representations in Indian English literature. By analyzing literary texts alongside socio-environmental realities, the study highlights how writers portray ecological fragility, displacement, and the erosion of traditional lifestyles. The paper argues that Indian English literature serves as a powerful medium to understand and critique the ongoing crises, offering insights into sustainability, identity, and resilience.
