Abstract

The rapid growth of social media has transformed the way students’ access, share, and exchange information related to environmental issues. This study explores the effect of social media on the development of eco-literacy among students, focusing on how digital platforms contribute to environmental awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and sustainable practices. Social media platforms provide students with opportunities to engage with environmental campaigns, educational content, scientific discussions, and sustainability initiatives, which can enhance their understanding of ecological challenges. The study examines the role of social media in promoting environmental responsibility and encouraging students to adopt eco-friendly behaviour in their daily lives. It also considers the challenges associated with online misinformation, passive engagement, and limited critical evaluation of environmental content. The findings suggest that social media can serve as an effective educational tool for developing eco-literacy when used strategically with reliable and informative environmental resources. The study highlights the importance of integrating social media-based learning approaches into educational systems to strengthen students’ environmental knowledge and encourage sustainable decision-making.
